CHARCOAL WOMEN
Democratic Republic of Congo, July, 2016

Charcoal production is the primary factor of deforestation in the DRC: few women produce it, but many sell it, and almost all use it to cook and heat in a country where only 15% of people have intermittent access to electricity. Women are most impacted by deforestation, because they make up to 80% of the farmers in the country, and have to walk further to the forest than they used to, exposing themselves to sexual abuse.
