Luigi Di Maio, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and leader of the Five Star Movement talks at a meeting in the city of Lamezia Terme in Calabria, south of Italy, organized to support the Five Stars Movement candidate for the Calabria Region elections due on the 26th of January, 2020. CREDIT: Francesca Volpi for The Wall Street Journal"Story Summary: CALABRIA Nicola Gratteri is the most influential person in Calabria’s election, but he’s not on the ballot. Gratteri, an anti-mafia prosecutor, has taken on Italy’s most powerful criminal organization – the ‘Ndrangheta, based in the deep-south region of Calabria – and that has put him in the crosshairs of politicians on the left and right. He recently ordered the arrest of over 300 people with suspected ‘Ndrangheta links, one of the biggest mafia busts in Italy’s recent history. They included politicians on the left and right. Further politicians in the region are under investigation by Gratteri. The ‘Ndrangheta has become one of the world’s biggest crime syndicates, eclipsing the Sicilian Mafia. Its estimated revenues of $60 billion a year are bigger than those of all the drug cartels of Colombia and Mexico together. Its tentacles extend across the global cocaine trade and into many parts of the legal and less-legal economy of Italy and the EU. But the ‘Ndrangheta’s base remains a secretive network of families in Calabria, one of the poorest and most corrupt regions in Western Europe. Gratteri’s wave of arrests has shaken up Calabria just as its people elect a new regional government on Jan. 26. The investigations have forced both of the leading candidates for regional president to pull out of the race. The incumbent Democrat pulled out after his right-hand man was arrested. “In the past, the ‘Ndrangheta sought out politicians,” says Gratteri. “Now it’s the politicians who seek out the ‘Ndrangheta for votes.” Supporters of Gratteri’s crackdown hope the election could mark the start of major
